TomTom Map data is bought in from TeleAtlas, maps are updated roughly once a year, and cannot be downloaded as free updates - the only way to update your maps is to purchase new maps from TomTom, which come with activation code required for use.

TomTom are very cagey about current map versions, so if you buy a TomTom all in one which has been stuck on a shops shelves for a few months, you may end up with older maps than if you had bought the latest stock - there is no easy way to avoid this other than checking versions below for latest !
