What would be needed to make the TomTom GO work with a WLAN USB-Stick?

HW: build a Docking Cradle with a USB-Host-Plug
SW:
. The linux Kernel should support the Hardware quite out of the box, shouldn't it?
probably configure and build a new kernel.
  1. approach:
let the TOMTOM Go SW connect over WLAN-IP to retrieve traffic info, wheather, etc.
  2. approach:
use the TomTomGO at home as a console to
. gather info in the [home] net and display summary (mails, phone calls, alerts etc)
. get a browser running. This would require some kind of Input, maybe using the remote control (with the 500/700) and a GUI.

Digital Camera Remote Capture

One interesting application of Opentom's USB capability could be as a remote control for a digital camera. My Canon Digital IXUS 400 (and most Powershot models) has a USB connector and comes with the program "Remote Capture" that only runs under Mac OS and MS Windows 98/Me/2000/XP (i.e., not on handhelds). But there is also a free software "Capture" [1] for Linux, based on libptp [2], the picture transfer protocol library. I have no idea, but I suppose the camera uses its own battery for the USB port. Since the camera is USB slave, this requires the Linux computer (Opentom) to act as a USB host. Applications include:

  • Store the images on the Opentom, immediately geotag them.
  • Capture images at preprogrammed coordinates or intervals: "Drive-by shooting".
  • Use the Capture software's viewfinder on the Opentom screen (requires GTK) as a periscope or behind-the-vehicle camera.
  • Park the car and put the camera on a mast for an aerial view. You could use a laptop for this, but why bring a laptop if you have an Opentom?
